GDS 172 - Blog 12

An excellent example of typography that appealed to me this week was the Fedex logo word mark. I think that the word mark uses Future Bold. What i really liked about this well known logo was how the designer used the white space. I really liked the hidden arrow created by the negative space between the E and the X, which becomes part of the word mark. Many logos have great typography and it's interesting to see how creative designers use white space to make their logos stand out.

This is a three set brochure that was mailed in stages. We are now starting a new brochure project and I thought it would be nice to show several neat brochures that have repetition and consistency on a three set design. The repeating elements that really stand out to create rhythm is the placement and location of photos in every brochure. I really like how the position and size of the photos all create rhythm together because they flow very nicely from left to right through out each brochure. The design and layout is repeated on each brochure which helps connect (rhythm) the brochure set. Even the way the the photos are cropped on each picture helps unify the three set design even more.

Many calendars are build using systems grids. This calendar has four columns, and each column containing 3 months. The system grid is used here to organize the months with equal spacing in between each month. The system grid supports the structure of the page because it helps create accurate symmetry in the calendar causing it o look organized, and have unity. Something that might violate the grid is the year, "2013" by its position and also by its large size which really gets most of the attention.

I really like this artistic design because it achieves unity in creative ways. I really like the repetition of the round circles because the circles don't only create rhythm in the composition but also help create the face of woman. The designer also used proximity because to achieve unity because the circles are very close to each other specially in the center of the design which really helps relate the shapes more. The designer also used similarity because most of the circles share the same size and also the same color. When i saw this creative design I saw that the designer had achieve unity in the design successfully because with the help of circles he painted a face.

The positive and negative spaces work together very well in this creative word-mark. Its creativity is what makes this work mark logo beautiful and witty which makes it stand out. The positive space which creates the text "GDS ELECTONIC" and the two plugs definitely tells you what the company logo is all about,but what really makes this logo interesting is how the negative space is activated by the way it draws the letter "E" inside the plugs. The negative space helps the positive space complete the logo. When i saw this logo I really liked who the negative space form the letter "E" which help give the illusion of a Power Plug.

In this wordmark I liked how the The hidden shoe between the company initials conveys the company message in a very smart, beautiful, witty, elegant, stylish and interesting form. The negative space is what makes this logo creative because it helps draw the shoe between the initials "ts". The positive space also contributes in laying out the white type, but its the negative space that adds the final touch by helping display the small shoe illustration which is what makes the work mark really stand out.

This image is an asymmetrical design simply because we could cut this image in half and we would end up with to different separate parts. The white space is activated in this image effectively. The main object that we see first is an illustration of a character playing the saxophone. However, the negative space also becomes part of the illustration because it helps build a musicians face and a saxophone instrument. In the image above there is a incomplete women's face. However, our mind is filling in the missing information which is to complete the formation of a women's face. Our mind starts on by building familiar shapes and images by connecting the negative and positive space. Since the negative space becomes visible and also becomes part of the main illustration (character with saxophone), this means that the white space is been successfully activated because the negative space has been properly placed. The negative space becomes an important element in the composition. This image example doesn't only show an asymmetrical design and activated white space, but it also explains closure very well.

I chose this image because the first thing you see is two faces next to each other. However, if we pay attention there is another shape in white which is a vase. I like this design a lot because at first sight the only thing you see is the two faces, and that is because the the white space between the faces is acting as the negative space, whereas the black is the positive. I like the fact that positive and negative spaces are working together to mold the image. The white space is definitely what makes the two faces stand out, because the white space is being use in this design to draw the two faces.
