GDS 172 - Blog 3

We tend to see examples like this one of reverse type very often for warning signs. A good way to grab someone’s attention is to use reverse type, and for warning signs you definitely want to get attention so that individuals become aware of the dangers around them. Reverse type in this example brings emphasis to the words “HIGH VOLTAGE KEEP OUT” which is good because it is definitely telling people to be aware of the situation. The book EGD mentions that white letters look slightly smaller on black background and the designer uses large white letters to make them seem more noticeable and avoid the darker background from making them look smaller(the designer made the text bigger so they would read better). This sign is a good example of reverse type, it has lighter text over a black background for a good reason, to get attention and try to save lives by giving a warning to individuals.
